CANDLE CARE

As much as we rely on candles to brighten up our homes with their perfumes and light, they can just as easily take away things dearest to us from their burning flames. So how do we make the most out of our candle to make sure they have a long, healthy lifecycle? We have put together a list of guidelines for you so you can burn your candles safely and with love!
Let’s start by discussing some of the basic rules of thumb. The most important one (and maybe the most obvious) would be to never leave a burning candle unattended! Remember to keep out of reach of children and even pets! You don’t want to take risk of any accidents that may occur without your supervision. Speaking of supervision, accidents can also occur even you are in the room with a candle. You do not want an open flame near any fabrics, books or precious plants.
Is your candle collecting black soot in the jar? Is the flame flickering, too high, or emitting nasty smelling smoke? Put it out immediately! Trimming your wick will prevent all of these annoyances from developing. The wick should always be at about a 1/4 inch long and we recommend trimming before lighting to avoid having to deal with hot wax which is a messy pain to clean up.
If your candle wax melting in the center but not the sides? This is known as tunneling and it is not a good sign. The longer you burn the candle the shorter your wick becomes (especially if you are properly trimming).
If your candle is tunneling, the wax will solidify over the wick and make it harder to relight overtime. To prevent tunneling, all you need to do is make sure that the first time you light your candle is 3-4 hours long to encourage a nice even burn.
Don’t burn your candle for too long though! Four hours is plenty time for the scents from your candle to linger in the air around you. Stop use when only 1/4"-1/2” of wax remains. As an extra pro tip: Water can cause hot wax to spit back and may break the jar. Not only do you want to keep the jar intact for safety, but you also can reuse them as plant holders or other decorative DIY projects!
If you are interested in reutilizing your candle jars, you can clean them out easily using the freezing or boiling method. Our candles are made using soy wax, which has a low melting point. Pouring boiling water into the jar will easily melt the wax. Strain out any melted bits of wax and clean out the jar using soap and water.
In contrast, freezing your jar is also an effective method of cleaning out your jar. Simply break up the remainder of the candle wax in the jar and stick the candle in the freezer. Once the wax freezes, it can be easily removed with a spoon. Again, rinse out the jar with soap and water and you’ve got a clean reusable jar good as new!
Please refer to the labeling instructions at the bottom of the jar as a reminder on how to practice safe and happy candle burning!
